Veterans' Day at the CNE
My father and I met
on Veterans’ Day
and watched the parade
while it rained
lightly
covering the sound
of fewer feet
marching.
He cursed
the young turks
who cut
through the ranks
oblivious
to the pride
of ancient
stiff backs
spit-polish shoes.
My father picked the spot
where we watched
from start
to finish
one payment
on an old debt
my father has passed on
to me.
